In The Odyssey of Phillis Wheatley, historian David Waldstreicher presents the most comprehensive account of Wheatley’s life and works, challenging longstanding myths, uncovering her personal relationships, and offering a deeper understanding of her poetry and the Revolutionary era. Waldstreicher highlights the enduring significance of a woman whose words, in a foundational moment of American literature, declared: "Thy Power, O Liberty, makes strong the weak / And (wond’rous instinct) Ethiopians speak."
